Shortlist for the World Architecture Festival Announced

More than 340 Architectural projects have been shortlisted across 32 award categories for the World Architecture Festival (WAF).

Nominees will then go onto challenge for the most high profile WAF accolades of "World Building of the Year" and "Future Building of the Year”.

Some of this years highlights include a luxury jungle home in Brazil, a happiness centre in Bhutan, Hanazono Kindergarten and Nursey, Okinawa, Japan. Architects short-listed come from 42 different nations with projects based across 58 countries. UK-based architects have the highest number of projects on the shortlist. With nominations from the UK in almost every category it shows how the UK is at the forefront of global architecture. UK nominations were as follows:

  • Civic and Community category - The Library at Willesden Green, London
  • High Education & Research category - Drawing Studio in Poole, Sainsbury Wellcome Centre for Neural Circuits and Behaviour at University College London (UCL), Oxford University’s Middle East Centre at St Anthony’s College.
  • House category - Tin House, London.
  • Mixed Use category - Crossrail Place, London.
  • New and Old category - Royal Court Theatre in Liverpool, the Academic Wing in Oxford, Live Works in Newcastle Upon Tyne, Canada House in London, The Garden Building at Lincoln College in Oxford, and Deirdre Dyson Gallery in London.
  • Religion category - Vajrasana Buddhist Retreat Centre in Suffolk.
As well as the above three UK buildings were nominated in the Office category. Two UK schools were nominated in the the Schools category. UK buildings were also nominated in the Shopping, Commercial, Competition Entries, Education, Experimental, Hospital, House, Infrastructure, Masterplanning Future, and Residential categories.
